Ward defeats Kessler

Andre Ward defeated Mikkel Kessler and claimed the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight Title belt at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. Ward won by technical decision after the bout was stopped in round 11.

The Referee Jack Reiss stopped the fight because of cuts caused by head butts. According to the announcers there were five unintentional head-butts occurred on the fight. Mikkel Kessler received cuts on both eyes, there were head butts occurred that were not called. Cuts were checked by doctors and advised to stop the fight.

Andre Ward used his speed and technique to outbox Mikkel Kessler in every round. Kessler displayed poor performance because of frustration. Ward aggressively attacked Kessler with lots of punches from different angles.

After the victory Ward said, "Right now, I'm dreaming," "I don't know what I'm feeling. I can't compare this to winning the gold medal, because it's going to take a while for it all to sink in.

Kessler was very upset because of the stoppage. He said that he was not happy with the referee and to Ward’s dirty tactics.

"He was the better man tonight, but I would have liked the fight to go another minute," Kessler said. "I knew I could have continued. I was cut, but the cuts weren't that bad. He threw a lot of elbows, and there were a lot of head butts, and he never got any warnings. ... I don't want to sit here and complain all the time, but I wasn't happy with the referee."
