Kelly Pavlik stops Miguel Espino

Dec. 21, 2009 | by Isdel Gaza

Kelly Pavlik stopped Miguel Espino in the 5th round on Saturday night in Youngstown, Ohio. This was a successful defense for his WBC and WBO titles.

It was a great comeback fight for Pavlik after a 10-month layoff because of staph infection on his left hand. Pavlik floored Espino in the 5th round after connecting heavy uppercuts. He also dropped Espino twice in the 4th round.

The first knockdown made Espino so desperate to fight back against Pavlik. He was badly hurt but instead of saving his energy for a perfect assault he attacked Pavlik recklessly.

According to John Bray, Espino’s trainer, Espino didn't stick to their gameplan and decided to slug it out against the middleweight champion. Espino fell into his predator’s trap because of being reckless on the fight.

"As soon as Miguel got hit, the warrior came out and he went toe to toe," "He didn't stick to the gameplan. He's a real warrior. Kelly Pavlik is a great champion and a big puncher. We fell into his trap."Bray said.

"I thought I hurt him a few times," "He didn't think I could hit. He thought he could bully me, but I don't remember taking one step back. ... If there was ever a day to take a champion down, today was the day." Espino said.
