Edwin Valero stops Antonio DeMarco

Feb. 08, 2010 | by Jhon Edwards

WBC lightweight titlist Edwin Valero (27-0, 27 KO) stopped Antonio DeMarco (23-2-1, 17 KO) after nine rounds on Saturday night at the Arena Monterrey.

Valero suffered a cut on his forehead in the second round from accidental left elbow. Mario Morales [cutman of Valero] did a great job stopping the bleeding. Overall, it was a good night for Edwin Valero. Valero displayed great speed and big left punches to stop DeMarco in the ring.

Valero said, "My physical strength started to show,". "Little by little, I started gaining ground. The first three or four rounds I couldn't hit him with my jab, but then I started to connect."

"I demonstrated once again that I am a boxer, that I do side steps, and I'm technical. I’ve never said it, but all my team and the people around me know that I can box. It's just that a majority of the fights have been against boxers who have gone out early," Valero said.

DeMarco was exhausted because of pressure from Valero.

"As a Mexican fighter, I did not want to quit, but my corner saw throughout the fight that Valero was the better fighter," DeMarco said.

DeMarco went to the locker room of Valero, apologized for the accidental left elbow and congratulated him.
